Should my salon close on Mondays or other slow days?

Sometimes. Shortening a slow day often beats closing it.

Close a slow day only if it keeps losing money after wages week after week and most of those clients would happily book another day. Often the better move is a shorter day with fewer people on the floor, which keeps the regulars who love that day and cuts the hours that sit empty.

Look at the day, hour by hour

A slow day is rarely slow from open to close. Often the morning is quiet and the evening is fine.

Made-up salon. Gold days pay for themselves. Rose days sit under the line.

In this made-up week only Monday sits under the line. The question is whether the whole day loses money or just part of it.

Close, shorten or keep

Example numbers
OptionWages savedSales keptWeekly profit change
Keep Monday as is$0$1,000$0
Shorten to 11 to 6, one fewer stylist$190$900+$90
Close Monday, 60% move to other days$420$600+$20

Made-up salon. Closing saves the most wages, but if clients do not move, the sales go with them. Rent and bills are the same either way.

Before you decide

  • Look at at least three months of that day, not one bad week.
  • Check who books it. If it is mostly regulars who work weekends, they may leave instead of moving.
  • Ask the team. Some stylists want that day; others would love it off.
  • Try shorter hours for a month before closing for good.
  • In high-minimum-wage areas, remember that commission stylists still have to be paid at least minimum wage for quiet hours.

Quick answers

Should a salon be closed on Mondays?

Only if Monday loses money after wages week after week and most Monday clients would book another day. Many salons do better shortening Monday and running fewer stylists than closing it.

Does closing a slow day save money for a salon?

It saves wages for that day, but rent and bills stay the same, and some clients may not move to another day. The savings only count if most of the sales come back on other days.

How do I know if a slow day is losing money?

Compare what the day brings in with what it costs to have the team on the clock, plus its share of rent and bills. Look hour by hour, since often only part of the day is the problem.
