How full are my salon chairs, really?
Chair utilization, explained without the spreadsheet talk.
Utilization is a fancy word for a simple idea: of all the time your team is paid to be on the floor, how much of it is spent with a client in the chair? It is the clearest way to see whether your book is truly full or just feels full.
Picture it as a filled glass
Each stylist's paid day is a glass. Time with clients fills it. Gaps, late starts with nobody booked, and early finishes left empty are the air at the top.
Made-up salon. Each bar is how full the chairs were that day. Gold days are nicely full. Rose days have a lot of paid air.
You do not want every glass filled to the brim. A little room keeps the day calm. What you want to catch is the same day being half empty week after week.
How to check yours
- Add up the time clients were actually in the chair for a week (your booking app shows appointment lengths).
- Add up the hours your team was paid to be there.
- Divide the first by the second. That share is your utilization.
- Do it by day and by stylist, not just for the whole week. The week can look fine while Tuesday is mostly air.
Ways to fill the glass
- Rebook at checkout so next month fills before it arrives.
- Offer short add-ons that slot into gaps: gloss, treatment, bang trim, brow.
- Use processing time by starting a quick service while color sits.
- Shift hours, not people, on days that stay half empty.
- Keep a waitlist for cancellations so a gap becomes a booking.

Quick answers
What is chair utilization in a salon?
Chair utilization is the share of your team's paid time that is spent with a client in the chair. It shows how full the book really is compared with the hours you are paying for.
How do I calculate salon utilization?
Divide the hours clients were in the chair by the hours your stylists were paid to be on the floor for the same period. Look at it by day and by stylist to find where the gaps are.
What is a good utilization rate for a salon?
Most salons aim to be mostly full while leaving some room for running-late clients, walk-ins and rebooks. More useful than any single target is spotting the same day or stylist running half empty week after week.
