How to see salon profit from your Square export
Square is great at sales. Profit after stylist wages needs another step.
Square Appointments and Square sales reports show what sold, when and by whom. They are not a salon profit dashboard. They do not usually subtract stylist wages and payroll tax, or show revenue per labor hour against your cost per hour. Export Item Sales Detail (or the salon sales export Tangled accepts) for whole days, add paid hours and wages, and you can see profit by day and by stylist. Tangled Analytics does that from the Square export. It is an add-on, not a replacement for Square.
What Square reports show (and what they do not)
Square is built for bookings and sales. Its reports are good at showing tickets, staff sales and busy days. They usually do not subtract wages and payroll tax from those sales, and they do not show revenue per labor hour or profit after wages by day and by stylist.
Square Item Sales Detail and related sales reports list line items and totals. Labor and profit after wages for a salon team are usually outside those screens.
That gap is normal. Booking software is not a profit dashboard. The same pattern shows up in GlossGenius, Vagaro, Phorest, etc.: strong sales views, thin profit views.
Sales is not profit after wages
| Week view (example) | Sales in booking report | Payroll + tax | Profit after wages |
| Monday | $1,100 | $1,250 | -$150 |
| Thursday | $2,800 | $1,400 | +$1,400 |
| Saturday | $5,400 | $1,900 | +$3,500 |
Made-up salon. The booking report can look fine on Monday while that day loses money after wages.
Owners who only watch ticket totals miss quiet paid hours. Pair sales with revenue per labor hour, payroll percentage and profit margin so one busy Saturday cannot hide a weak midweek.
Export from Square, then see profit
Export Item Sales Detail (or the sales file your Tangled Square guide names) for whole days. Avoid partial-day ranges so Monday's quiet hours stay visible.
- Follow the step-by-step export guide: how to export from Square.
- Upload that file to Tangled Analytics (or start with the free profit snapshot: no account, no card).
- Read profit by day and by stylist, plus RPLH and labor share, from the same export you already pull for bookkeeping.
Tangled is an add-on that sits on top of Square. It does not replace your booking system, calendar or checkout. Keep Square for appointments. Use Tangled when you want the money picture those reports skip.
Export how-tos for other systems live on the export guides hub: GlossGenius, Vagaro, Square, Phorest, etc.
What you can do once you see the picture
- Cut or shorten days that stay under the wage floor (closing slow days).
- Match paid hours to booked hours (schedule stylists to demand).
- Raise prices where the book is full (how to raise salon prices).
- Follow the profit-first sequence in how to maximize salon profits and how to make more money with a salon.
Also useful: what is a good RPLH, profit per stylist from GlossGenius or Vagaro, busy but not profitable.
Quick answers
Does Square show salon profit after wages?
Square shows sales and related reports. For a salon team, it does not usually show profit after stylist wages by day and stylist, or RPLH against your wage floor. You need the sales export plus paid hours and wages.
How do I see profit from a Square export?
Export Item Sales Detail or the salon sales file Tangled accepts, then combine it with wages. Tangled Analytics shows profit by day and stylist from that export. Start with the free profit snapshot at tangleddata.com or the Square export guide.
Is Tangled a Square alternative?
No. Keep Square for payments and appointments. Tangled is an add-on for profit analytics from the export you already download.
What if I use GlossGenius, Vagaro or Phorest instead?
Same idea for GlossGenius, Vagaro, Phorest, etc. Export sales, then see profit. All export how-tos are on the Tangled guides hub.
