I'd like to tell you how my wife, Ashly, and I started Tangled LLC.
Ashly was working at a salon a few days each week. One day, every payroll check for the stylists bounced. She came home that evening and asked me a question I wasn't expecting.
“Do you want to buy a salon?”Ashly, that evening
To be honest, I was hesitant. A business that cannot make payroll has obvious problems, and I wasn't eager to take them on. Even so, Ashly reached out to the owner to see whether those challenges had created an opportunity to sell. The answer was yes.
I am a mechanical engineer by trade. Before making a life-changing decision, I wanted to see the numbers. I wanted data.
The salon used GlossGenius for booking and transactions. Their website highlighted analytics, so I assumed I would find the answers there. I didn't.
The reports showed sales, appointments, and activity. They told me what happened. What they didn't tell me was whether the business was actually healthy.
So I started building my own tools. What began as a personal due-diligence project eventually became Tangled Analytics.
Tangled was born from a simple question.
If sales were good, why wasn't profitability where it should have been?
The booking software showed revenue. The chairs looked busy. The calendar appeared full. Then we put labor hours next to revenue.
We discovered shifts that weren't producing enough revenue, services that weren't generating the margins we expected, and staffing patterns that were quietly eating profit. The booking systems had the transactions. They just didn't provide the full picture.
So I started exporting checkout files, comparing labor hours against billable hours, analyzing utilization, measuring revenue per labor hour, checking service performance, and building profitability reports for our own salon. We built the dashboards for ourselves first because we were the people writing the checks.
And once we could clearly see what was happening, we started making better decisions.
This was never supposed to be a software business. We built these tools because we were evaluating a salon we wanted to own. If we had never purchased the salon, Tangled Analytics would probably never exist. The reports on this site are still based on the same framework we use to evaluate our own operation every week.
Today, Tangled Analytics helps salon owners track the numbers that actually matter: utilization, revenue per stylist, peak business hours, service performance, trends, profitability, and revenue per labor hour, plus retention and rebooking.
The goal isn't to replace your booking software. The goal is to help you understand why the week happened and what to do next.
We did end up purchasing the salon, and we still operate it today. That's the entire story.
Ryan and Ashly. Husband and wife. Salon owners. Tangled Analytics was built inside a real salon using real payroll, real staffing decisions, and real financial responsibility. If you're looking for another booking platform, you're probably already using a good one. If you're trying to understand profitability, labor efficiency, and what drives growth, that's why we built this.
